Civil Society as Precursor and Consequence of Democracy: Indonesia Case Study

Abstract

It is widely understood that there is relationship between civil society and democracy in general. However, there is question regarding civil society and democracy relevancy, that is, whether civil society is a precursor of democracy or as a consequence of democracy. This research investigates this relationship, particularly by putting Indonesia as a case study. This research uses qualitative methods and relying on library research by using journals, books, articles and others references. The finding of this research concludes that civil society is a precursor of democracy, but in order to have a vast, vibrant, strong, dynamic civil society in an ideal form, civil society needs democracy.
