Abstract

ABSTRACT

Objective The objective of this research is to find the effect of breathing relaxation method towards the pain intensity in the first stage-active phase of childbirth at BPM Mardiah and BPM Halijah in Langsa city, Aceh, Indonesia. Method This research is a quantitative research with Quasi Experimental Design type, where the design used is The Posttest Only Control Group Design. This research was conducted at BPM Mardiah and BPM Halijah in Langsa city, Aceh, Indonesia from June to September 2016. The sample was mothers who were in the first stage-active phase of childbirth which was divided into two groups: Control Group and Treatment Group. The sample of Control Group was in BPM Halijah Langsa city where breathing relaxation method was not applied, while the sample of Treatment Group was in BPM Mardiah Langsa city where breathing relaxation method was applied. The number of samples for each group was 16 mothers who were in the first stage of childbirth so that the total sample was 32 mothers. Results Based on the results of Parametric Prerequisite tests applied to the Control Group and Treatment Group at BPM Halijah and BPM Mardiah Langsa City, the researcher obtained a significance value of 0.163 for the Control Group and a significance value of 0.065 for the Treatment Group. Based on the Independent T-Test, the researcher found that breathing relaxation method had a significant effect on the pain intensity in the first stage-active phase of childbirth. It was shown by probability value (Sig.) 0.000 < 0.05, where Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. Conclusion Based on the observation, the researcher found that the pain intensity in the first stage-active phase of childbirth experienced by mothers who applied breathing relaxation is lower than the pain intensity experienced by mothers who did not apply it. The mean value in the Control Group was 7.13 and the mean value in the Treatment Group was 1.63.

Keywords : Breathing relaxation, pain intensity in the first stage-active phase of childbirth.
